And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred, and fourtie, and foure cubites, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the Angel. Revelation 21:17 (KJV)

and forty

and four cubits,

according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. Revelation 21:17 (KJV)

The book of Revelation is the last book of the New Testament, written by the Apostle John. It is a prophetic work that unveils future events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the new heaven and new earth. Throughout Revelation, measurements are used symbolically to convey spiritual truths. In this verse the measurement of the wall of the New Jerusalem, the heavenly city, is highlighted.

The number “144” is significant in biblical numerology, symbolising perfection or completeness. It is the product of 12 multiplied by 12, where the first twelve represents God’s people—the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles—and the second twelve represents God’s divine government. The wall of the New Jerusalem is measured to be 144 cubits. A cubit is an ancient unit of length, roughly the distance from a person’s elbow to the tip of the middle finger. This measurement emphasizes the wall’s grandeur, strength, security and permanence. Its immense height suggests that nothing impure or evil will be able to enter the city (see Revelation 21:27).

The verse adds that the measurement is “according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.” This can be understood in two ways. First, it implies that the dimensions are based on human standards, indicating that the wall’s size is not beyond human comprehension. Second, it suggests that the angel who is measuring uses the same standard as a man, underscoring the accuracy and precision of the measurement.

Application: This passage reminds believers of the future glory and perfection of the New Jerusalem. It signifies the ultimate fulfilment of God’s promises to His people and reassures that in the eternal dwelling place of God they will experience complete security, protection and peace. The verse also encourages believers to pursue holiness and purity, knowing that only those cleansed by the blood of Jesus will enter the heavenly city.

In conclusion, Revelation 21:17 presents the measurement of the wall of the New Jerusalem, emphasizing its grandeur, permanence, and the perfection of God’s divine government. It serves as a reminder of the glorious future that awaits believers and calls them to live in a manner that aligns with God’s standards.
