Revelation 22:18

Listen to this article

For I testifie vnto euery man that heareth the wordes of the prophesie of this booke, If any man shal adde vnto these things, God shall adde vnto him the plagues, that are written in this booke. Revelation 22:18 (KJV)

The book of Revelation is the final book of the New Testament, containing the revelation given by Jesus Christ to the apostle John. It is a highly symbolic and prophetic work that describes the end‑times events and the ultimate victory of Christ over evil. In this concluding verse John issues a solemn warning against adding anything to the words of the prophecy contained in this book. The warning is directed specifically at the contents of Revelation and does not explicitly extend to the rest of Scripture.

The seriousness of the warning is underscored by the promise that anyone who adds to the prophecy will incur God’s judgment, for He will add to that person the plagues that are written in the book. This emphasizes the grave consequences of altering or manipulating God’s Word.

Preserving the integrity of Scripture is essential. God’s Word is sacred and must be kept in its original form; adding or subtracting from the prophetic message undermines its authority and can lead to distortion. Believers are therefore called to handle the Bible with reverence and to faithfully transmit its teachings.

Historically, when Revelation was composed, false prophets and teachers often introduced their own ideas and interpretations, leading people astray. This warning served as a safeguard against such practices, ensuring the purity and accuracy of the divine revelation.

For contemporary believers the admonition remains highly relevant. It calls us to approach the Bible, especially the book of Revelation, with humility, avoiding any attempt to twist its message to fit personal agendas or beliefs. Diligent study, reliance on the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and careful attention to the overall context and intent of the biblical authors are essential for accurate interpretation.

In conclusion, Revelation 22:18 stands as a solemn reminder of the importance of preserving the integrity and accuracy of God’s Word. It urges believers to treat Scripture with reverence and humility, safeguarding the prophetic message for future generations.
