Revelation 22:4

Listen to this article

“And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a prophetic and symbolic book, often difficult to interpret. It was written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. In this final chapter, John is describing the New Jerusalem, the eternal dwelling place of believers in God’s presence.

Seeing His face:The phrase “And they shall see his face” signifies a direct and intimate encounter with God. In the Bible, seeing someone’s face denotes closeness, favour, and personal relationship. Here, it implies that those who dwell in the New Jerusalem will have unrestricted access to God’s presence, experiencing a profound communion with Him. This stands in contrast to the limitations and veils that existed in the past, where people could not see God’s face directly (Exodus 33:20).

His name on their foreheads:The phrase “and his name shall be in their foreheads” symbolises ownership, identification, and allegiance. In ancient times, people often wore emblems or marks on their foreheads to indicate their loyalty or devotion to a particular deity or authority. In this context, having God’s name on their foreheads suggests that those who belong to Him are marked and identified as His own. It signifies a complete dedication and commitment to God’s authority and character.

Spiritual application:Revelation 22:4 teaches us several important spiritual lessons:

  • Intimate fellowship with God: The promise of seeing God’s face reminds us of the ultimate reward for believers. In heaven, we will enjoy an unobstructed and unhindered relationship with our Creator, free from sin and all barriers. It speaks of the fulfilment of our deepest longing to be in God’s presence and experience His love, joy, and glory in its fullest measure.
  • The seal of ownership: Having God’s name on our foreheads signifies that we belong to Him. As Christians, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), indicating that we are set apart as God’s chosen people. This seal not only demonstrates our allegiance to God but also serves as a guarantee of our future inheritance and protection.
  • Devotion and identification: God’s name on our foreheads represents our complete dedication to Him. It reminds us that our thoughts, actions, and choices should reflect our commitment to live according to His Word and purposes. We are called to bear His name with honour, faithfully representing His character and values in the world.
