Listen to this article

And he that sate was to looke vpon like a Iasper, and a Sardine stone: and there was a rainebow round about the Throne, in sight like vnto an Emeralde. Revelation 4:3 (KJV)

The book of Revelation, authored by the apostle John while exiled on the island of Patmos, presents a series of visions that reveal the heavenly worship scene and the throne room of God. In chapter 4 John is caught up in the spirit and is given a vivid glimpse of the divine throne.

The One Who Sat on the Throne

– The verse opens by describing the appearance of the One who sits on the throne. The phrase “he that sat” refers directly to God. His likeness is compared to jasper and sardius (carnelian), precious stones noted for their brilliance and beauty. This imagery emphasizes the radiant glory, purity, and majesty of God. Jasper symbolizes purity, transparency, holiness, and righteousness, while the fiery red of sardius may point to divine judgment and the passionate love of God.

The Rainbow

– Surrounding the throne is a rainbow described as “like an emerald.” The emerald‑green hue conveys the magnificent beauty of the divine presence and evokes the covenant promises associated with rainbows throughout Scripture. It reminds believers of God’s covenant with Noah after the flood and underscores His unwavering faithfulness. The emerald color also signifies life, renewal, and hope.

Symbolism and Interpretation

– Revelation’s language is highly symbolic. The combined imagery of jasper, sardius, and the emerald rainbow points to the transcendent glory and beauty of God, as well as His covenant‑keeping nature. The rainbow’s presence signals God’s faithfulness, while the stones highlight both His holiness and His righteous judgment.

Application

– This vision invites believers to contemplate the awe‑inspiring majesty of God’s throne room. It reminds us of God’s holiness, righteousness, and steadfast covenant promises. Trusting in the rainbow’s symbolism, we can find assurance that God keeps His promises and remains ever‑present in our lives. The verse encourages believers to rely on God’s faithfulness, to seek the hope and renewal symbolized by the emerald rainbow, and to live in the confidence of His glorious, covenant‑bound presence.

In summary, Revelation 4:3 portrays the radiance and beauty of God through the imagery of jasper, sardius, and an emerald rainbow encircling His throne. The passage calls us to reflect on God’s glory, His covenant faithfulness, and the assurance we have in His unchanging promises.
