Revelation 5:8

“And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.”

Context:The Book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, contains a series of visions and prophecies concerning the end times, the return of Jesus Christ, and the establishment of God’s kingdom. In Revelation 5, John sees a vision of a scroll with seven seals in the right hand of God, which no one is found worthy to open except for Jesus, referred to as the Lamb.

  • The Four Beasts and the Twenty-Four Elders:In this verse, the four living creatures (often called “beasts” in the KJV) and the twenty-four elders are mentioned. These beings are worshiping before the Lamb, Jesus Christ, as He takes the book. The four living creatures are introduced in Revelation 4 and are described as having different faces (lion, calf, man, and eagle), representing different aspects of creation and God’s dominion over them. The twenty-four elders symbolize the redeemed people of God, representing the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ (Revelation 21:12-14).
  • Harps:The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders are depicted as having harps. The harp is an instrument associated with praise and worship, often mentioned in the Psalms and other parts of the Bible. Their act of having harps signifies their constant praise and adoration of God.
  • Golden Vials Full of Odors:In addition to the harps, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders are described as having golden vials full of odors. These vials represent the prayers of the saints, which are being presented before God. The imagery of the prayers as fragrant odors suggests that they are pleasing to God, symbolizing the heartfelt petitions and worship of believers.
  • Significance:This verse highlights the worship and reverence given to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, by both the heavenly beings (the four living creatures) and the redeemed people of God (the twenty-four elders). It underscores the exalted status of Jesus as the only one found worthy to open the sealed scroll. The mention of the prayers of the saints emphasizes the importance and effectiveness of prayer in the divine economy, with the prayers of believers being presented before God in worship and adoration.
