Revelation 9:2

And hee opened the bottomelesse pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great fornace, and the sunne and the ayre were darkened, by reason of the smoke of the pit. Revelation 9:2 (KJV)

Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and is known for its apocalyptic imagery and prophetic messages. It has traditionally been ascribed to the apostle John, who is said to have written it while exiled on the island of Patmos, though many contemporary scholars note that the author’s identity remains uncertain. The book contains visions and revelations given to John by Jesus Christ, providing insight into the end times and the ultimate victory of God over evil.

In Revelation 9:2 we encounter a vivid description of an event where a bottomless pit is opened, and a great smoke arises from it, likened to the smoke of a great furnace. The sun and the air are darkened because of the thick smoke that emerges from the pit.

To understand the meaning of this verse it is helpful to consider the broader context of Revelation. In the preceding verse, Revelation 9:1, a star falls from heaven to earth and is given the key to the bottomless pit; an angel is described as receiving that key. The opening of the pit and the ensuing smoke follow, and the bottomless pit is often associated with the realm of the demonic or the abyss.

The imagery of the smoke and darkness can symbolize spiritual darkness, chaos, or the influence of evil forces in the world. The obscuring of the sun and air signifies the pervasiveness and intensity of the darkness that emanates from the pit.

This passage is part of a larger series of judgments and plagues unleashed upon the earth during the end times. These judgments are depicted through symbolic language and metaphors, and the purpose of such imagery is to convey profound spiritual truths and to encourage believers to remain faithful to God in the midst of adversity.

Interpreting specific details in Revelation can be challenging because the book contains highly symbolic language. Different scholars and theologians may offer varying interpretations. It is essential to approach these passages with humility, relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and sound biblical scholarship.
