Romans 10:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:31
Listen to this article

“But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular chapter, Paul addresses the issue of Israel’s rejection of the Gospel and highlights the importance of faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. He contrasts the righteousness that comes by faith with the self-righteousness of the Jews who relied on their adherence to the law.

Exegesis:

“But I say, Did not Israel know?”:Paul begins by acknowledging that the Israelites, as God’s chosen people, had knowledge of God’s law and His ways. They were well-acquainted with God’s covenant and the promises made to them.

“First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people”:Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 32:21, where Moses prophesied that God would provoke Israel to jealousy through a nation that was not previously His people. This was a warning to Israel that God would extend His grace and mercy to the Gentiles, who would accept Him and become partakers of His promises. Israel, being God’s chosen people, should have recognized the significance of this.

“And by a foolish nation I will anger you”:The reference to a “foolish nation” is also from the same verse in Deuteronomy 32:21. The foolishness refers to the Gentiles who were considered foolish in terms of worldly wisdom, as they did not possess the knowledge of God’s law and covenant like the Israelites. Through the acceptance of the Gospel by the Gentiles, Israel would be provoked to anger and jealousy. The implication is that the Gentiles’ willingness to embrace the truth and the promises of God, which the Israelites had rejected, would cause Israel to reevaluate their rejection and hopefully turn back to God.

Key Takeaways:

  • In this passage, Paul addresses the unbelief of the Israelites in rejecting Jesus as the Messiah. He reminds them that God had already foreseen the inclusion of the Gentiles into His redemptive plan.
  • The “no people” and “foolish nation” refer to the Gentiles who, despite not having a prior relationship with God, would be recipients of His grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This would provoke Israel to jealousy and hopefully lead them to reconsider their rejection of the Gospel.
  • It is essential to recognize that God’s salvation is not limited to a specific ethnic group or nationality. The Gospel is meant for all people, and faith in Jesus Christ is the means by which both Jews and Gentiles can be reconciled to God.

Overall, Romans 10:19 serves as a reminder of God’s plan to extend salvation to all people and encourages the Israelites to reevaluate their stance on the Gospel in light of the inclusion of the Gentiles. It also reminds believers today that God’s salvation is available to everyone, regardless of their background or nationality.
