Romans 10:3

“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”

Context:The book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul, is a letter addressed to the believers in Rome. In this particular section, Paul is addressing the Jews and discussing the relationship between faith and righteousness.

Understanding the Verse:

  • Ignorance of God’s Righteousness:The verse begins by highlighting the ignorance of the Jews concerning God’s righteousness. The term “ignorant” implies a lack of knowledge or understanding. In this case, it refers to the Jews’ lack of comprehension of God’s standard of righteousness, which is grounded in His character and revealed through His laws and commands.
  • Establishing Their Own Righteousness:Paul then states that the Jews were attempting to establish their own righteousness. This refers to their reliance on their own efforts to attain righteousness before God. The Jews, steeped in the traditions and laws of Judaism, sought to achieve righteousness by strictly adhering to the Mosaic Law, including the rituals, sacrifices, and external acts of obedience.
  • Failure to Submit to God’s Righteousness:Paul concludes by asserting that their attempts to establish their own righteousness led to a failure to submit to the righteousness of God. By relying on their own works, the Jews failed to recognize that true righteousness comes from God alone and is obtained through faith in Him. They missed the essential truth that no one can achieve righteousness by their own merit but must humbly submit to God’s righteousness and accept it as a gift through faith.
  • Theological Insights:
  • God’s Righteousness:The verse underscores the importance of understanding God’s righteousness. God is perfectly righteous and demands the same from His creation. His righteousness serves as the standard by which all humanity will be judged. It is not something that can be achieved through human effort alone.
  • Human Efforts vs. God’s Grace:The verse highlights the futility of relying on human efforts to attain righteousness. Our own works and self-righteousness are insufficient to bridge the gap between our sinful nature and God’s perfect standard. Instead, righteousness is granted by God as a gift of His grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Submission and Humility:The verse emphasizes the need for submission and humility before God. We must acknowledge our inability to attain righteousness on our own and surrender ourselves to God’s righteousness. True righteousness is not earned or established by our own works but received by surrendering to God’s saving grace through faith.
  • Application:

    • Recognizing our Need for God:We should humbly acknowledge our inability to achieve righteousness through our own efforts. Instead, we should turn to God, recognizing our need for His righteousness and grace.
    • Trusting in God’s Provision:Instead of relying on our works, we are called to trust in God’s provision of righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. This involves accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, acknowledging His sacrificial death on the cross as the means by which we are made righteous before God.
    • Pursuing God’s Righteousness:As believers, we are called to pursue a life of righteousness that flows from our faith in God. This involves conforming to God’s standards, as revealed in His Word, and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to transform us into the likeness of Christ.

In summary, Romans 10:3 highlights the importance of understanding and submitting to God’s righteousness rather than relying on our own efforts. It teaches us that true righteousness comes from God as a gift of His grace and is received through faith in Jesus Christ.
