Romans 11:6

Listen to this article

“And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”

Romans 11:6 (KJV) states:This verse is found in the context of the apostle Paul’s discussion about the salvation of Israel and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in the plan of God. In Romans 11, Paul addresses the question of whether God has rejected His people Israel permanently. He explains that God has not rejected them entirely but rather, He has a remnant of believers chosen by grace.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning:

“And if by grace, then is it no more of works”:Here, Paul emphasizes the concept of grace, which is unmerited favour or God’s undeserved kindness towards humanity. He highlights that if salvation is based on grace, then it cannot be obtained through human works or efforts. In other words, salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned by our own deeds or achievements.

“Otherwise grace is no more grace”:Paul emphasizes the exclusive nature of grace. If salvation were dependent on human works, then it would cease to be grace. Grace stands in contrast to works. Grace is God’s initiative and act of love, freely given to us, while works refer to human efforts to earn salvation.

“But if it be of works, then is it no more grace”:Paul further emphasizes the dichotomy between grace and works. If salvation were attainable through human works, then it would not be grace. Works imply self-righteousness and self-justification, whereas grace acknowledges our complete dependence on God’s mercy and His work on our behalf.

“Otherwise work is no more work”:This statement serves as a conclusion to Paul’s argument. If salvation were based on works, then it would be reduced to a mere transaction or a wage earned, rather than an undeserved gift. Works would lose their meaning and significance in the context of salvation.

In summary, Romans 11:6 highlights the distinction between grace and works in the context of salvation. It affirms that salvation is entirely based on God’s grace and not on human works. It underscores the idea that our salvation is a gift from God that we receive through faith, rather than something we can earn or deserve through our own efforts.

This verse emphasises the central Christian doctrine of justification by faith, which teaches that we are made right with God and receive salvation through our faith in Jesus Christ, not by our works. It highlights the importance of recognising and acknowledging our dependence on God’s grace for our salvation.
