“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord”

Context:To fully understand a Bible verse, it’s important to consider the context. The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul to the Christian community in Rome. In this particular section (Romans 12:1-21), Paul is addressing the practical aspects of Christian living and how believers should conduct themselves in light of God’s mercy and grace.

Not Slothful in Business:The phrase “not slothful in business” can also be translated as “not lagging behind in diligence” or “not lazy in zeal.” Paul encourages Christians to be diligent and active in their pursuits, whether it’s their work, service, or ministry. This verse reminds believers that they should not be lazy or lacking in enthusiasm when it comes to their responsibilities and tasks.

Fervent in Spirit:The phrase “fervent in spirit” means to be passionate, enthusiastic, and fervent in our devotion to God. As Christians, we are called to serve the Lord with zeal and passion, allowing the Holy Spirit to work within us and guide our actions. This fervency of spirit should be evident in our worship, prayer life, and service to God and others.

Serving the Lord:The final part of the verse emphasizes the motivation behind our diligence and fervency. We are called to serve the Lord in all that we do. Our work, our relationships, and our daily activities should be centered around honoring and glorifying God. When we understand that our ultimate purpose is to serve the Lord, it brings a sense of joy, purpose, and meaning to our lives.

Application:Romans 12:11 challenges us to examine our attitude and commitment to various aspects of our lives. Here are some practical applications based on this verse:

  • Work Diligently:Whether in our secular jobs or ministry endeavours, we should approach them with diligence, giving our best effort, and honouring God through our work.
  • Cultivate Passion for God:We should cultivate a fervent spirit in our relationship with God. This can be done through regular prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His presence. We should be enthusiastic about our faith and let it overflow into all areas of our lives.
  • Serve with Joy:As we serve others, let us do it with joy, remembering that we are ultimately serving the Lord. Our actions should reflect God’s love and grace to those around us.

By understanding and applying Romans 12:11, we can strive to live a life that is diligent, passionate, and focused on serving the Lord in all that we do.
