Romans 12:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”

Context:To fully understand the meaning of Romans 12:18, it is important to consider its surrounding verses and the broader context of the book. In Romans 12, Paul is addressing practical instructions for Christian living. He emphasizes the importance of spiritual transformation and the unity of believers within the body of Christ.

Seeking Peace:The verse begins with the phrase “If it be possible.” This implies that Paul acknowledges the challenges that can arise when trying to live in peace with others. It recognizes that peace may not always be achievable due to external factors or the actions of others. However, Paul encourages believers to make every effort to pursue peace whenever it is within their control.

Personal Responsibility:The verse continues, “as much as lieth in you.” Here, Paul highlights the individual responsibility of each believer. While we cannot control the actions of others, we are accountable for our own conduct and attitude. Paul urges believers to do their part in promoting peace, showing love, and maintaining harmonious relationships with everyone they encounter.

Living Peaceably:The verse concludes with the instruction to “live peaceably with all men.” This emphasizes the inclusive nature of our call to peace. As Christians, we are called to live in peace not just with fellow believers, but with all people. Our interactions should reflect the transformative power of Christ’s love, displaying patience, forgiveness, and reconciliation whenever possible.

  • Conflict Resolution:Romans 12:18 encourages us to actively seek peace and engage in conflict resolution. It reminds us to approach disagreements with a spirit of humility and a desire for reconciliation, always striving to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner.
  • Christian Witness:Our commitment to living peaceably with others reflects our witness to the world. By exemplifying Christ-like attitudes and behaviours, we demonstrate the transformative power of the gospel and draw others to God’s love.
