“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

Context:Romans is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Rome. In the preceding chapters, Paul explains the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith and the righteousness of God. In chapter 12, Paul shifts his focus from doctrinal teaching to practical application, urging believers to live out their faith in daily life.

The Grace Given:Paul begins by acknowledging the grace given to him as an apostle and teacher. He emphasises that the instruction he is about to give is not based on his own authority but comes from the grace bestowed upon him by God.

Not to Think Highly of Oneself:Paul exhorts the believers not to think of themselves more highly than they ought to think. This verse addresses the issue of pride and self-importance. Pride can hinder the unity and effectiveness of the body of Christ. Paul encourages believers to have a proper understanding of themselves and their gifts.

Think Soberly:Paul calls believers to think soberly. This means having a balanced and realistic view of oneself. Instead of overestimating their own importance or abilities, believers are to have a humble perspective. They should recognise their strengths and weaknesses, realising that all they have is a result of God’s grace.

Measure of Faith:Paul reminds believers that God has given each person a measure of faith. This refers to the varying degrees of faith that individuals possess. Faith is a gift from God, and it is through faith that we are justified and saved. God distributes faith according to His purpose and plan for each person.

Application:The primary application of this verse is to cultivate humility within the body of Christ. Believers should recognise that their abilities and accomplishments are gifts from God. They should avoid arrogance, pride, and comparing themselves with others. Instead, they should use their gifts and talents to serve one another and build up the church.

  • Unity in Diversity:This verse also highlights the importance of recognising the diversity of gifts within the church. Each person has a different measure of faith and unique abilities. Instead of competing or looking down on others, believers should appreciate and honour the various gifts that God has distributed. This understanding fosters unity and cooperation among believers.
