For, for this cause pay you tribute also: for they are Gods ministers, attending continually vpon this very thing. Romans 13:6 (KJV)

Context: The Book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul, addresses various aspects of Christian living and doctrine. In chapter 13, Paul discusses the Christian’s responsibility to submit to governing authorities and emphasizes the importance of fulfilling civic duties.

Tribute and Government: In verse 6, Paul specifically mentions tribute, which refers to the payment of taxes or duties to the government. The word “tribute” in Greek is “phoros,” which denotes an obligation or tax paid by citizens to support the functioning of the government.

God’s Ministers: Paul states that those who collect tribute are “God’s ministers.” This implies that the governing authorities are divinely appointed to fulfill specific responsibilities. It highlights the importance of recognizing the legitimacy of the government and its role in maintaining order and justice.

Attending Continually: The phrase “attending continually upon this very thing” emphasizes the ongoing nature of the government’s responsibilities. The expression “attending unto that which is good for the people” further underscores that those in positions of authority are constantly engaged in duties that benefit the community and should be recognized and supported accordingly.

Application:

Romans 13:6 teaches believers the importance of honoring their civic responsibilities, including the payment of taxes. It reminds Christians that the government has a God‑given role in society and that they should demonstrate respect and obedience within the bounds of God’s laws.

Further Study:

To gain a deeper understanding of the overall context and message of Romans 13, it is recommended to read the entire chapter. Additionally, studying related passages such as Matthew 22:15‑22, Mark 12:13‑17, and 1 Peter 2:13‑17 can provide further insights into the Christian’s relationship with the government and the importance of civic obedience.

Remember, studying the Bible involves examining the surrounding verses, considering the historical context, and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to develop a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.
