Romans 13:9

Listen to this article

“For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

In this verse, Paul is emphasizing the importance of loving one’s neighbor as oneself. He lists several commandments from the Old Testament Law that deal with human relationships, specifically focusing on commandments that relate to how we treat others.

“Thou shalt not commit adultery”: This commandment refers to the prohibition against engaging in sexual relationships with someone who is not one’s spouse. It emphasizes faithfulness and loyalty in marriage.

“Thou shalt not kill”: This commandment prohibits the act of taking someone’s life unlawfully. It emphasizes the sanctity of human life and the value God places on it.

“Thou shalt not steal”: This commandment instructs against taking someone else’s property without their permission. It promotes honesty and respect for others’ possessions.

“Thou shalt not bear false witness”: This commandment prohibits giving false testimony or lying against one’s neighbor. It highlights the importance of truthfulness and integrity in our speech.

“Thou shalt not covet”: This commandment addresses the inner desires and thoughts of the heart. It cautions against desiring or coveting what belongs to others, reminding believers to be content with what God has provided.

By including these commandments, Paul underscores the idea that the command to love one’s neighbor encompasses various aspects of our interactions with others. When we genuinely love our neighbor, we will naturally refrain from committing these harmful actions against them.

Furthermore, Paul asserts that if there are any other commandments in addition to the ones he listed, they can all be summarized and encapsulated in the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus Himself reiterated this principle when He was asked about the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-39).

In summary, Romans 13:9 calls believers to live in love and to treat others with respect, faithfulness, honesty, and integrity. It reminds us that the command to love our neighbor encompasses the essence of God’s commandments and should guide our conduct in all our relationships.
