Romans 14:13

“Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular chapter, Paul addresses the issue of differences in opinions among believers regarding certain practices, such as eating meat and observing certain days as holy. He encourages believers to accept and respect one another, rather than judging and condemning each other.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “Let us not therefore judge one another any more”:The phrase “let us not” is an exhortation for believers to refrain from passing judgment or condemning one another based on their differing opinions and practices.
  • “but judge this rather”:Instead of judging one another, Paul encourages believers to focus their judgment on a particular matter.
  • “that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way”:The focus of the judgment should be to ensure that believers do not do anything that could cause their fellow believers to stumble or be led into sin. It emphasizes the importance of considering the spiritual well-being of others and not causing them to stumble through our actions or attitudes.
  • Application and Lessons:
  • Avoid Judgment:This verse reminds us to refrain from judging or condemning fellow believers based on their differing opinions and practices. Instead, we should embrace diversity within the body of Christ and seek unity in love.
  • Prioritize Spiritual Well-being:Our focus should be on promoting the spiritual well-being of others. We should consider how our actions and attitudes might affect fellow believers and strive to create an environment that encourages their growth in faith.
  • Avoid Being a Stumbling Block:We are responsible for ensuring that our conduct does not become a stumbling block for others. We should be cautious not to engage in activities that could lead others into sin or cause them to struggle in their faith.
  • Cultivate a Spirit of Grace and Acceptance:Rather than judging and criticizing, we should extend grace, acceptance, and understanding towards one another. This promotes a healthy and loving community where people feel safe to grow and express their faith.
  • Related Scriptures:
  • Matthew 7:1-2 (KJV): “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”
  • 1 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV): “But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.”
  • Galatians 5:13 (KJV): “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

Remember, the overall message of Romans 14 is to prioritise love, unity, and mutual respect among believers.
