Greete Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Iesus: Romans 16:3 (KJV)

The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul and is regarded as one of his most important and comprehensive theological works. In the final chapter Paul sends greetings to various individuals in the Roman church, expressing his appreciation for their support and partnership in the Gospel.

Priscilla and Aquila were a married couple who played a significant role in the early Christian community. They were Jewish by birth and tentmakers by trade. They first appear in Acts 18 when Paul arrives in Corinth, where they were living temporarily. They invited Paul to stay with them, worked together with him in their trade, and later accompanied him on his missionary journeys, including time in Ephesus.

The phrase “my helpers in Christ Jesus” (also rendered “my fellow workers in Christ Jesus”) highlights the important role that Priscilla and Aquila played in Paul’s ministry. They were not merely acquaintances or supporters; they actively participated in spreading the Gospel and advancing the cause of Christ, engaging in hospitality, teaching, and evangelism.

Priscilla and Aquila demonstrated faithful service to Christ by dedicating their lives to His work. They willingly opened their home to Paul and used their skills as tentmakers to support his ministry. Their example reminds believers of the importance of using one’s gifts and resources for God’s purposes.

Their partnership with Paul exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and unity within the body of Christ. Working together, they complemented each other’s strengths and became a valuable source of support and encouragement. Their relationship teaches the value of teamwork and cooperation in advancing God’s kingdom.

The couple’s example also shows that ministry is not limited to official church roles. While working as tentmakers, they turned ordinary occupations into opportunities to spread the Gospel. Their lives demonstrate that every aspect of daily life can be a platform for serving God and impacting others.

As we reflect on Romans 16:3, we can learn from Priscilla and Aquila’s example by actively engaging in service to Christ, seeking opportunities for partnership and unity within the body of Christ, and recognizing that our everyday lives can be avenues for ministry.
