Romans 2:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life.”

Context:Romans is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular chapter, Paul is addressing the Jews and Gentiles, emphasizing that all people are accountable to God and will be judged based on their actions and the condition of their hearts.

Patient Continuance in Well-Doing:Paul highlights the importance of persistence in doing good. It means consistently living a righteous life and striving to follow God’s commandments. Our faith should be demonstrated through our actions, and we should remain steadfast in our commitment to righteousness.

Seeking for Glory and Honor and Immortality:This phrase suggests the motivation behind the actions of those who patiently continue in well-doing. Rather than seeking self-gratification or worldly rewards, believers are called to seek glory, honor, and immortality. This points to a desire for heavenly rewards and a deep longing to please God, acknowledging His authority and sovereignty.

Eternal Life:The ultimate reward for those who diligently seek God and persevere in righteousness is eternal life. This refers to an everlasting, intimate relationship with God, free from sin and death, and enjoying His presence for all eternity.

Application:Romans 2:7 teaches us several important lessons:

  • Consistency in doing good:We should not grow weary in doing what is right, but rather continue steadfastly, knowing that our actions have eternal significance.
  • Right motivation:Our deeds should not be driven by self-centered ambitions or earthly rewards. Instead, we should be motivated by a desire to bring glory and honor to God and seek eternal blessings from Him.
  • Hope in eternal life:Believers have the assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. This should give us hope and encouragement, especially during challenging times.

Overall, Romans 2:7 encourages believers to persevere in doing good, with a focus on seeking God’s glory and honor, and holding on to the hope of eternal life.
