Romans 5:19

“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”

Romans 5:19 (KJV):This verse is found in the fifth chapter of the book of Romans, where the apostle Paul explores the theme of salvation and justification through faith in Jesus Christ. In this particular verse, Paul draws a parallel between two men: Adam and Jesus Christ.

One Man’s Disobedience:The first part of the verse refers to Adam’s disobedience. In the book of Genesis, Adam, the first man, disobeyed God’s command by eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This act of disobedience introduced sin into the world and resulted in the fallen nature of humanity. Adam’s disobedience affected all of his descendants, making them sinners by nature.

Many Were Made Sinners:The consequence of Adam’s disobedience is that all human beings inherited a sinful nature. This means that everyone is born with a natural inclination towards sin, separated from God, and deserving of His judgment. This inherited sin nature results in the commission of actual sins in our lives.

The Obedience of One:The second part of the verse focuses on the obedience of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth as a man to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. He lived a perfect, sinless life, and through His obedience, He accomplished what Adam could not. Jesus willingly went to the cross, offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Many Shall Be Made Righteous:Through Jesus’ obedience and sacrificial death, salvation is made available to all who believe in Him. Just as Adam’s disobedience affected all of humanity, Jesus’ obedience brings righteousness to all who trust in Him. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, His righteousness is imputed to us, and we are declared righteous before God. This justification is not based on our own works but on faith in Christ.

In summary, Romans 5:19 emphasizes the parallel between Adam and Jesus Christ, highlighting the impact of their actions on humanity. Adam’s disobedience resulted in the sinfulness of all people, but through Jesus’ obedience and sacrifice, salvation and righteousness are made available to all who believe in Him. This verse highlights the central theme of the gospel, the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, and the justification received through faith in Him.
