Romans 6:19

“I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”

Romans 6:19 is part of a larger passage in the book of Romans where the apostle Paul discusses the concept of being dead to sin and alive in Christ. In this verse, Paul uses an analogy to help the believers in Rome understand the transformation that should take place in their lives.

Context:In the preceding verses of Romans 6, Paul explains that through faith in Jesus Christ, believers have died to sin and have been united with Him in His death and resurrection. As a result, they are no longer under the dominion of sin but are now empowered to live righteously.

The manner of men and the infirmity of the flesh:Paul starts by acknowledging the limitations of human understanding and the weakness of the human flesh. He speaks “after the manner of men” or in human terms to make his point relatable and understandable. The flesh refers to the human nature that is prone to sin and temptation.

Yielding members to sin:Paul points out that before coming to Christ, the believers had willingly offered their bodily members (parts of their bodies) as servants to uncleanness and iniquity. In other words, they had allowed themselves to be enslaved to sinful desires and actions, engaging in unrighteous behaviour.

Yielding members to righteousness:Paul challenges the believers to now present or yield their bodily members as servants of righteousness and holiness. This means that as Christians, they are to offer themselves fully to God, allowing Him to work in and through them to live a life that aligns with His will and character.

The key message in Romans 6:19 is the call to a complete transformation in the lives of believers. Just as they once willingly offered themselves to sin, they are now called to offer themselves wholeheartedly to God and His righteousness. This involves a shift in allegiance, from being under the control of sin to being under the lordship of Christ.

By yielding their members to righteousness, believers are to live a life marked by holiness and obedience to God’s commands. It is a call to actively participate in the sanctification process, allowing the Holy Spirit to work within them and conform them to the image of Christ.
