Romans 6:8

Listen to this article

“Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul and is considered one of the most important books in the New Testament. The letter was addressed to the believers in Rome, both Jews and Gentiles, and it contains profound teachings on the nature of sin, salvation, and the righteousness of God.

In Romans 6, Paul addresses the issue of believers’ union with Christ and its implications. He emphasizes that through faith in Jesus Christ, believers are united with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection. This union is symbolized through baptism, where believers identify with Christ’s death and resurrection as they are immersed in water.

Let’s break down the verse for a deeper understanding:

“Now if we be dead with Christ”: Here, Paul is referring to believers who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Through faith, they are united with Christ in His death on the cross. This signifies that believers have died to their old self, their sinful nature, and the power of sin.

“We believe that we shall also live with him”: Paul is expressing the belief that just as Christ was raised from the dead and now lives, believers will also experience new life with Him. This new life refers to both the present spiritual transformation that occurs when one becomes a Christian and the future hope of eternal life in the presence of God.

Key Themes:

  • Union with Christ:This verse highlights the concept of believers being united with Christ in His death and resurrection. It emphasizes the transformative power of faith in Jesus, which brings about a spiritual union and a new life.
  • Death to Sin:Through this union, believers are declared dead to sin. This means that sin no longer has dominion over them, and they are freed from its power. They are now able to live a life characterized by righteousness and obedience to God.

Hope of Resurrection:The verse also points to the hope that believers have in being raised to eternal life. Just as Christ conquered death and lives, believers have the assurance of living with Him in the future, experiencing the fullness of His resurrection power.

Application:

  • Romans 6:8 serves as a reminder to believers of the significance of their union with Christ and the transformative power it holds. It encourages them to live in the reality of their new identity in Christ, no longer being enslaved to sin but living a life that reflects their union with Him.

This verse also offers comfort and hope to believers, assuring them of the future resurrection and eternal life they have in Christ. It inspires them to live in light of this hope, knowing that their present struggles and sufferings are temporary in comparison to the glory that awaits them.
