“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.”

Context:The book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is a letter addressed to the believers in Rome. It covers various theological and practical aspects of the Christian faith. In Romans 7, Paul discusses the struggle between the law and sin, emphasizing the need for redemption through Christ.

The Law is Spiritual:Paul starts by acknowledging the spiritual nature of the law. The law referred to here is the Mosaic law, given to the Israelites through Moses. It contained commandments, regulations, and guidelines for righteous living. The law was intended to reveal God’s holy standards and expose human sinfulness (Romans 3:20). Paul affirms that the law itself is spiritual, meaning it originates from God and reflects His character.

Carnal Nature:Paul then transitions to a personal reflection on his own struggle with sin. He confesses, “I am carnal.” The word “carnal” refers to the human nature dominated by sinful desires and tendencies. Paul is highlighting the inherent conflict between the spiritual law and our fallen human nature. Despite being a devout follower of God, he acknowledges that his human nature is prone to sin, just like anyone else.

Sold under Sin:Paul expresses his understanding of the power of sin in human life by saying he is “sold under sin.” This phrase indicates that sin has a hold on him, exerting its influence and control. It emphasizes the enslaving nature of sin, which Paul will later address in Romans 7:15-25.

Key Takeaways:

  • The law is spiritual and reveals God’s standard of righteousness.
  • Our human nature is inclined towards sin and is in conflict with God’s law.
  • Sin has a powerful hold on humanity, causing us to fall short of God’s standards.

Application:

  • Recognize the spiritual nature of God’s law and strive to live in accordance with it.
  • Acknowledge our sinful tendencies and the need for redemption through Jesus Christ.
  • Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the control of sin in our lives.
  • Cultivate a deeper relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with other believers, seeking His strength and guidance in our daily battles with sin.

Remember, studying the Bible further, reading the surrounding verses, and seeking additional resources can provide a more comprehensive understanding of Romans 7 and its implications for our Christian walk.
