Romans 8:22

Listen to this article

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”

Context:To better understand a verse, it’s important to consider its context. Romans 8 is a significant chapter in Paul’s letter to the Romans, which focuses on the life of the Spirit and the hope found in Christ. In this particular verse, Paul addresses the suffering and longing experienced by the entire creation.

Creation’s Groaning:The verse starts with the phrase, “For we know.” Paul is highlighting something that believers are aware of or have come to understand. The phrase “the whole creation groaneth” suggests that the entirety of creation, including the natural world, longs for something. This groaning indicates a sense of dissatisfaction, frustration, or the experience of pain and brokenness.

Travaileth in Pain:The phrase “and travaileth in pain together” emphasizes the intensity and shared nature of the suffering. It draws imagery from childbirth, where labor pains are a shared experience resulting in the birth of something new. The pain and labor in creation suggest that it is undergoing a process leading to a future transformation or redemption.

Until Now:The phrase “until now” implies that this groaning and suffering has been ongoing up until the present time. It indicates that creation has been in a state of longing and anticipation throughout history.

Overall, Romans 8:22 conveys the idea that creation is in a state of suffering and longing for something to be made right. It aligns with the broader theme of the fallen state of creation due to sin and its ultimate hope for restoration. This verse sets the stage for the subsequent verses in Romans 8, which discuss the redemption and liberation of creation through Christ.

As you continue to study the surrounding verses and chapters in Romans, you will discover more about the hope found in Christ and the role believers play in the ultimate restoration of creation.
