Romans 8:26

Listen to this article

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

Context:To better understand Romans 8:26, it’s important to consider the broader context. In the preceding verses, the apostle Paul discusses the sufferings of the present time in comparison to the glory that will be revealed in us (Romans 8:18). He emphasizes the eager expectation of creation for the revealing of the sons of God (Romans 8:19) and the hope of redemption and adoption as children of God (Romans 8:23).

The Helper in Our Weakness:Romans 8:26 begins with the phrase, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities.” Here, Paul introduces the role of the Holy Spirit in assisting believers in their weaknesses and limitations. The Greek word for “helpeth” can also be translated as “helps together” or “joins in aid.” It conveys the idea of the Holy Spirit coming alongside us to provide support and assistance.

Our Inability to Pray as We Should:The verse continues, “for we know not what we should pray for as we ought.” This statement highlights the reality that as human beings, we have limitations and often struggle to articulate our deepest needs and desires before God. We may be unsure about the specific things we should pray for or how to express our prayers adequately.

The Spirit’s Intercession:Despite our limitations, the verse assures us that the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us. Intercession refers to acting on behalf of another or intervening on their behalf. The Holy Spirit, being fully God, knows our hearts and understands our needs and desires even when we can’t express them adequately. He intercedes for us by bringing our prayers before God in a way that aligns with His perfect will.

Unutterable Groanings:The verse concludes, “but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” This phrase refers to the Spirit’s intercession using groanings or expressions that go beyond human language. It emphasizes the depth and intensity of the Spirit’s intercession on our behalf. These unutterable groanings represent the Holy Spirit’s perfect communication with God, bypassing human limitations.

The Comfort and Assurance:Romans 8:26 brings comfort and assurance to believers. It reminds us that even when we struggle to express our needs and desires in prayer, the Holy Spirit is present to help us. We can take solace in the fact that the Spirit intercedes for us in perfect harmony with God’s will, ensuring that our prayers are presented before Him effectively.

Application:As believers, we can draw several practical applications from Romans 8:26:

  • We should rely on the Holy Spirit’s assistance in prayer, acknowledging our limitations and seeking His guidance.
  • We can find comfort in knowing that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, even when we struggle to find the right words.
  • We should cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, inviting Him to guide and empower our prayer life.
  • We can have confidence that our prayers, regardless of our ability to express them, are heard and understood by God through the Holy Spirit’s intercession.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and explore the entire chapter of Romans 8 to gain a comprehensive understanding of the rich message and context of this verse.
