Romans 8:4

“That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Romans 8:4 (KJV):

This verse is part of the broader context of Romans 8, which deals with the power of the Holy Spirit and the life of a believer in Christ. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in more detail.

Fulfillment of the righteousness of the law:In this verse, the Apostle Paul states that the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us. The law he refers to here is the Mosaic Law, which includes the commandments and regulations given to the Israelites in the Old Testament. The law served as a standard of righteousness, outlining what is right and wrong according to God’s perfect standard. However, no one could perfectly fulfil the law, as all have sinned (Romans 3:23). Jesus Christ came to fulfil the law on our behalf (Matthew 5:17), and through faith in Him, we receive His righteousness.

Walking not after the flesh:The verse goes on to explain that those who fulfil the righteousness of the law are those who do not walk according to the flesh. The “flesh” here represents our sinful nature and our inclination to pursue our selfish desires rather than obeying God’s commands. Instead, believers are called to live a life that is guided by the Spirit of God.

Walking after the Spirit:To walk after the Spirit means to live in obedience to the guidance and leading of the Holy Spirit. As believers in Christ, we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live according to God’s will. By yielding ourselves to the Spirit’s leading, we are enabled to overcome the desires of the flesh and live in a way that pleases God.

The main message of this verse is that through faith in Christ, believers receive His righteousness, which fulfils the requirements of the law. Instead of living according to our sinful nature, we are called to live in obedience to the Spirit, allowing His guidance and power to transform us into the image of Christ.

This verse highlights the significance of the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of a believer. It is the Spirit who empowers us to live in righteousness and enables us to fulfil the righteous requirements of the law. By relying on the Spirit’s guidance, we can experience true spiritual growth and live a life that reflects the character of Christ.

Overall, Romans 8:4 emphasises the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer and underscores the importance of living a life that is led by the Spirit, rather than being controlled by our sinful nature.
