Romans 8:8

Listen to this article

“So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul and is considered one of the most important theological works in the New Testament. In the preceding verses, Paul discusses the contrast between living according to the flesh and living according to the Spirit. He emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer and the transformation it brings.

Meaning and Analysis:a. “So then”: This phrase implies that what follows is a conclusion or a logical consequence of what has been previously stated. In this case, Paul is drawing a conclusion based on the discussion of living according to the flesh and the Spirit.

b. “They that are in the flesh”: This refers to individuals who are unregenerate, who have not experienced the new birth in Christ. It describes those who are governed by their sinful nature, living according to their own desires and separated from God.

c. “Cannot please God”: This phrase indicates that individuals who are in the flesh, living according to their sinful nature, are unable to please God. Their actions, thoughts, and desires are contrary to God’s will. The unregenerate person’s sinful nature is in rebellion against God, and without the work of the Holy Spirit, they cannot live in a way that pleases Him.

Theological Implications:

a. Total Depravity: This verse aligns with the theological concept of total depravity, which states that humanity is inherently corrupted by sin. It emphasizes that apart from God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit, humans are incapable of pleasing God on their own.

b. Need for Transformation: The verse highlights the necessity of a transformative experience through the Holy Spirit. It points to the need for believers to be born again, receive a new nature, and be indwelt by the Spirit to please God.

c. The Role of Grace: Romans 8:8 underscores the importance of God’s grace in the process of salvation. It emphasizes that it is only through the grace of God, His unmerited favour, that individuals can be freed from their sinful nature and enabled to please Him.

  • Dependency on the Holy Spirit:As believers, we should recognise our dependence on the Holy Spirit. Through daily surrender and reliance on the Spirit, we can overcome the desires of the flesh and live in a way that is pleasing to God.
  • Pursuit of Holiness:Romans 8:8 challenges us to pursue a life of holiness, striving to align our thoughts, actions, and desires with God’s will. It reminds us to examine our lives and seek transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Sharing the Gospel:Recognising that those in the flesh cannot please God should motivate believers to share the message of salvation with others. We should seek to lead people to a relationship with Christ, where they can experience the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.
