Listen to this article

“For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of a verse to gain a clearer understanding. In Romans 9, the apostle Paul is discussing the sovereignty of God in choosing and calling His people. He addresses the issue of God’s choice between the descendants of Abraham and the inclusion of Gentiles into His plan of salvation.

Reference to Pharaoh:In this verse, Paul refers to the account of Pharaoh in the book of Exodus (specifically, Exodus 9:16). Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt during the time of Moses, and he opposed the release of the Israelites from slavery. God allowed Pharaoh’s resistance to serve a specific purpose.

Purpose of Pharaoh’s Role:The verse states that God raised up Pharaoh for a specific purpose. The purpose was twofold: to demonstrate His power and to make His name known throughout all the earth. Pharaoh’s stubbornness and resistance provided an opportunity for God to display His sovereignty and power through the plagues and the eventual deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt.

God’s Sovereignty:This verse highlights God’s sovereignty over all things, including the rulers and leaders of nations. God had a specific plan and purpose for allowing Pharaoh to rise to power and oppose the Israelites. It underscores that God’s actions and decisions are not limited by human understanding but are part of His greater plan.

Declaring God’s Name:The verse also emphasizes the purpose of making God’s name known throughout all the earth. Through the events surrounding Pharaoh and the subsequent exodus of the Israelites, God’s power and authority were clearly demonstrated. This served to declare His name and make known His character and attributes to the entire world.

Application:This verse can teach us several valuable lessons. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His ability to work even through human opposition to accomplish His purposes. It also emphasizes the importance of declaring God’s name and making His character known to others through our actions and testimonies. Additionally, it encourages us to trust in God’s greater plan, even when we may not fully understand the circumstances or the reasons behind them.

  • Overall, Romans 9:17 illustrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to use even those who oppose Him to accomplish His purposes.
  • It encourages us to trust in God’s plan, to proclaim His name, and to be aware of His power at work in the world.
