Romans 9:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.”

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s look at the context of Romans 9. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul is discussing God’s sovereignty and His plan of salvation. He is addressing the tension between God’s chosen people, the Israelites, and the inclusion of the Gentiles into God’s redemptive plan.

Old Testament Background:The phrase “Ye are not my people” refers to a prophetic statement found in the book of Hosea. In Hosea 1:9, the prophet Hosea is instructed by God to name his son Lo-Ammi, which means “not my people.” This symbolises God’s judgment on the unfaithful Israelites. However, in Hosea 1:10, God promises that the descendants of Israel will be as numerous as the sand of the sea and will be called “sons of the living God.”

Fulfillment in Christ:Paul quotes Hosea’s prophecy to show how it is fulfilled in Christ and the inclusion of the Gentiles into God’s family. In the past, the Gentiles were not considered God’s people, but through faith in Jesus Christ, they too can become children of the living God. Paul emphasises that salvation is not limited to the physical descendants of Abraham but is available to all who believe in Jesus.

Spiritual Adoption:This verse highlights the concept of spiritual adoption. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were God’s chosen people by birthright. However, in the New Testament, through faith in Christ, both Jews and Gentiles can be adopted into God’s family. They become children of the living God, experiencing a new relationship with God as their Father.

Application:Romans 9:26 reminds us of the inclusiveness of God’s salvation. It emphasises that God’s plan extends beyond ethnic boundaries. No matter our background or past, if we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we can be called children of the living God. It is a reminder of God’s grace and His desire to reconcile all people to Himself.

  • In conclusion:Romans 9:26 speaks of the inclusion of the Gentiles into God’s family, fulfilling the prophecy of Hosea. Through faith in Jesus Christ, those who were once not God’s people can now be called the children of the living God. This verse underscores the spiritual adoption that takes place when we embrace Jesus as our Saviour.
