Romans 9:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;”

Context:The book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is a letter addressing various theological topics. In Romans 9, Paul discusses God’s sovereignty in choosing Israel as His people and the role of faith in salvation.

Israelites:Paul begins by highlighting the privilege and unique position of the Israelites. They were descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and were chosen by God to be His special people.

Adoption:The Israelites enjoyed the status of being adopted by God as His chosen people. In the Old Testament, God established a covenant with Abraham and promised to bless his descendants and make them a great nation (Genesis 12:1-3). This adoption signified their special relationship with God.

Glory:The Israelites also experienced the glory of God in various ways. The presence of God dwelt among them in the tabernacle and later in the temple. They witnessed God’s power and glory through miracles, such as the parting of the Red Sea and His provision in the wilderness.

Covenants:God made several covenants with the Israelites throughout history. These covenants included the Abrahamic Covenant, the Mosaic Covenant (the giving of the law), and the Davidic Covenant, among others. These covenants established God’s promises and expectations for His people.

Giving of the Law:The Israelites were entrusted with the Law, which consisted of the commandments, statutes, and ordinances given by God through Moses. The Law served as a guide for righteous living and revealed God’s standard of holiness.

Service of God:The Israelites were appointed to serve God in various roles and functions. They were given the responsibility of maintaining the tabernacle/temple, offering sacrifices, and performing priestly duties. They were to represent God’s holiness to the nations.

Promises:Lastly, the Israelites were recipients of God’s promises. These promises included blessings, land inheritance (Promised Land), protection, and ultimately the promise of the Messiah, through whom all nations would be blessed.

In Romans 9:4, Paul acknowledges the privileged position and blessings that belonged to the Israelites. However, he goes on to explain in the following verses that not all physical descendants of Israel are automatically included in God’s spiritual promises. He emphasizes the importance of faith in Jesus Christ as the true fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel.

Overall, Romans 9:4 highlights the unique relationship between God and the Israelites, showcasing the rich blessings and responsibilities they had as God’s chosen people.
