Ruth 3:10

Listen to this article

And hee said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindnesse in the latter ende, then at the beginning, in as much as thou followedst not yong men, whether poore, or rich. Ruth 3:10 (KJV)

The book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who, after the death of her husband, chose to stay with her mother‑in‑law Naomi rather than return to her own people. Ruth’s faithfulness and loyalty to Naomi bring her to Bethlehem, where she gleans in the fields of Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s late husband. In Ruth 3 Naomi instructs Ruth to seek Boaz at the threshing floor as a potential kinsman‑redeemer.

When Ruth approaches Boaz, he responds, “Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter…,” acknowledging the greater kindness she has shown in the latter end than at the beginning. Boaz highlights that Ruth has not pursued younger men, whether poor or rich, and therefore honors her humility and devotion.

The passage displays several virtues. Ruth’s kindness and loyalty are evident in its decision to remain with Naomi and care for her, surpassing what was expected of a daughter‑in‑law. Her obedience and humility shine as she follows Naomi’s instructions and approaches Boaz with reverence, trusting in Naomi’s guidance. Throughout the narrative Ruth’s faithfulness to God and integrity in her relationships are consistently evident.

God’s providential hand is woven through the story. Ruth’s choice to stay with Naomi positions her in Boaz’s field, where it finds favor, protection, and ultimately becomes part of the lineage leading to King David and Jesus Christ. The narrative reminds believers that God works behind the scenes, directing circumstances for His purposes.

Application: Like Ruth, believers are called to demonstrate kindness and loyalty beyond what is required, showing love to those around us. Obedience and humility should characterize our response to God’s direction, trusting that He will provide guidance and protection. Finally, the story encourages confidence in God’s providence, even when the path ahead seems uncertain, knowing that He orchestrates events for our good and His glory.
