Ruth 3:12

Listen to this article

And now it is true, that I am thy neare kinseman: howbeit there is a kinseman nearer then I. Ruth 3:12 (KJV)

The book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who became part of the Israelite family through her marriage to Boaz. After the death of her husband, Ruth chose to stay with her mother‑in‑law Naomi and accompany her back to Bethlehem. In Ruth 3 Naomi devised a plan for Ruth to approach Boaz, a close relative and potential redeemer, in order to secure their family’s future.

In Ruth 3:12 Boaz acknowledges Ruth’s request for him to fulfill the role of a kinsman redeemer. As the near kinsman he recognizes a responsibility toward Ruth and her deceased husband’s family, yet he informs her that there is another kinsman who has a closer relationship and therefore priority as redeemer.

Key Themes

Kinsman Redeemer – In the Old Testament a kinsman redeemer was a male relative charged with redeeming or rescuing a family member in difficulty, whether by redeeming property, marrying a widow to provide an heir, or otherwise preserving the family line. Boaz admits his role but points out that another relative has a prior right.

Faithfulness and Integrity – Boaz’s response demonstrates his integrity and adherence to Israelite law and custom. He does not take advantage of the situation or make a hasty decision; instead he respects the established order, revealing his character as an honorable man.

God’s Sovereignty – Although not mentioned explicitly in the verse, the events of Ruth display God’s sovereign providence. Through the faithfulness and obedience of Ruth and Boaz, God’s hand guides circumstances to fulfill His purposes, preserving the lineage that leads to King David and ultimately to Jesus Christ.

Application

Trust in God’s Timing – Ruth’s journey required patience and trust in God’s timing. Likewise, believers may need to wait on God’s guidance, confident that He works according to His perfect plan even when circumstances seem uncertain.

Faithful and Honorable Conduct – Boaz’s integrity serves as a model. Christians are called to act with integrity in all areas of life, treating others with respect and upholding righteousness.

God’s Redemption – The Old Testament concept of a kinsman redeemer points forward to the ultimate redemption found in Jesus Christ. Just as Boaz acted as a redeemer for Ruth’s family, Christ is our Redeemer who paid the price for sin and offers salvation and eternal life, giving hope and assurance in God’s redeeming love.

In conclusion, Ruth 3:12 highlights Boaz as a near kinsman while introducing the broader principle of the kinsman redeemer. It underscores the importance of integrity, trust in God’s timing, and the underlying theme of God’s sovereign providence throughout the narrative.
