Song of Solomon 1:15

Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes.

Song of Solomon 1:15 (KJV)

The Song of Solomon is a poetic book in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. In this verse, the bridegroom speaks, praising the beauty of his beloved. His words come as a direct reply to the bride, who has just described his glory and sweetness. The bridegroom now turns to commend her, showing that their love is mutual and full of admiration.

The bridegroom repeats his praise twice: “Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair.” This repetition stresses the depth of his affection. The word “fair” means beautiful and lovely. It points to her outward beauty, but also to her inner character. He calls her “my love,” a title of special closeness and endearment. Then he says, “thou hast doves’ eyes.” In biblical imagery, doves’ eyes stand for innocence, gentleness, purity, and devotion. The bridegroom sees in her eyes a sincere and faithful heart. Her gaze is not proud or wandering, but tender and true.

Throughout the Song of Solomon, the love between the bride and bridegroom is often understood as a picture of the relationship between Christ and the Church. In this reading, the bridegroom represents Christ, and the bride represents God’s people. The verse then shows Christ’s loving regard for His church. He sees her as beautiful and pure, not because of her own perfection, but because of the devotion He has placed in her heart. The dove imagery also appears at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16), where the Holy Spirit descends like a dove, reinforcing the same qualities of gentleness and purity that mark the bride’s eyes.

  • Recognize inner beauty: This verse encourages us to value the character and virtues of others, not just their outward appearance. The bridegroom delights in his beloved’s pure heart, and we can learn to affirm such qualities in those around us.

  • Express affection: The bridegroom openly praises his beloved. His example reminds us to speak words of love and appreciation to our family and friends. Simple, sincere affirmation strengthens relationships.

  • Pursue a pure heart: Doves’ eyes symbolize purity and innocence. As believers, we are called to keep our thoughts and desires fixed on what is good and godly. A pure heart reflects Christ’s love to others.

  • Understand God’s love: When we see Christ as the bridegroom, this verse assures us that He delights in His people. He calls us “fair” and looks on us with tender affection. This truth invites us to rest in His love and respond with faithful devotion.

The bridegroom’s words are not flattery but genuine admiration. He sees what is lovely in his beloved and says so clearly. In the same way, Christ sees His church with grace and compassion. He does not ignore our faults, but He values the sincere faith He has planted in us. This verse calls us to receive His love with humility and to reflect that same loving gaze toward others. When we look at people as Christ does, we begin to see the beauty He sees.
