“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.”

Context of the Song of Solomon:The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a poetic and allegorical book found in the Old Testament. It is attributed to King Solomon and is often interpreted as an expression of love and desire between a bride and groom, symbolic of the relationship between Christ and His Church.

The Pursuit of Intimacy with God:In Song of Solomon 1:2, the bride expresses her desire to be kissed by her beloved. This verse reflects the deep longing and pursuit of intimacy. In a spiritual sense, it represents the desire of the believer to experience a close and personal relationship with God. The kisses of the mouth signify a deep, intimate connection and communion with the beloved.

The Significance of Love:The bride acknowledges that the love she seeks is better than wine. Love is a central theme in the Song of Solomon, emphasizing its surpassing value. The love described in this book represents the intense and passionate love that God has for His people and the reciprocal love that His people should have for Him. It is a love that is more satisfying than any earthly pleasure or substance.

Love that Exceeds Earthly Pleasures:Wine was considered a luxurious and pleasurable drink in biblical times. By stating that God’s love is better than wine, the bride emphasizes that the love she desires from her beloved surpasses any earthly pleasure or desire. This verse encourages believers to seek a love that transcends temporal and fleeting pleasures, finding fulfillment and satisfaction in the love of God.

Application for Believers:Song of Solomon 1:2 reminds believers of the importance of seeking intimacy with God and pursuing a deep relationship with Him. It invites us to desire a genuine encounter with God’s love, which is more satisfying than any worldly pleasure. It encourages us to prioritise our relationship with God and to find our ultimate fulfilment in His love.

In conclusion, Song of Solomon 1:2 portrays the deep longing for intimacy with God and the surpassing value of His love. It serves as an invitation for believers to pursue a close and intimate relationship with God, recognising that His love is better than any worldly pleasure.
