Song of Solomon 5:13

Listen to this article

“His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.”

Context of the Verse: The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a poetic book found in the Old Testament. It is attributed to King Solomon and depicts the love relationship between a bride and her bridegroom. It uses beautiful and vivid imagery to describe the longing, desire, and deep affection between the two lovers. This particular verse is part of a dialogue between the bride and her friends, as she describes the physical attributes of her beloved.

Symbolic Interpretation: In Song of Solomon 5:13, the bride is describing the physical features of her beloved. However, this verse also holds symbolic meaning beyond the literal description. The use of metaphors and imagery in the Song of Solomon is often interpreted allegorically to represent the love relationship between Christ (the bridegroom) and the Church (the bride). Therefore, this verse can be seen as an expression of the beauty and sweetness of Christ’s character.

“His cheeks are as a bed of spices”:This phrase conveys the idea of richness and delight. The cheeks are compared to a “bed of spices,” indicating their attractiveness and pleasing aroma. It highlights the beauty and charm of Christ’s countenance. Just as a bed of spices exudes a sweet fragrance, the presence of Christ in our lives brings joy, refreshment, and a sense of satisfaction.

“His lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh”:Here, the bride compares the lips of her beloved to lilies that release sweet‑smelling myrrh. Lilies are known for their beauty and purity, while myrrh is a fragrant resin often associated with anointing and healing. This imagery suggests that Christ’s words are gracious, comforting, and full of wisdom. His words bring healing and restoration to our hearts, and they are pleasant and soothing to the soul.

Application: As we reflect on Song of Solomon 5:13, we can apply its principles to our relationship with Christ and our interactions with others:

  • Appreciation of Christ’s beauty:Just as the bride appreciates the physical beauty of her beloved, we should take time to recognize and appreciate the beauty of Christ’s character. We can do this by studying His life and teachings in the Scriptures, meditating on His attributes, and cultivating a deep love for Him.
  • Seeking the fragrance of Christ’s presence:Like the aroma of spices and myrrh, the presence of Christ in our lives should bring delight and joy. We can seek His presence through prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. His presence refreshes our spirits and fills our lives with a sweet fragrance.
  • The power of Christ’s words:The description of Christ’s lips dropping sweet‑smelling myrrh emphasizes the power and impact of His words. As His followers, we should cherish His teachings and let them guide our thoughts, words, and actions. We can also strive to speak words of encouragement, grace, and truth to others, just as Christ does.
  • Reflecting Christ’s beauty and fragrance:As the Church, we are called to reflect the beauty and fragrance of Christ to the world. Through our actions, attitudes, and love for others, we can display the character of Christ and draw people to Him.

In conclusion, Song of Solomon 5:13 beautifully describes the physical and symbolic beauty of Christ. It invites us to appreciate His attractiveness, seek His presence, and be transformed by His words and character. May we continually grow in our understanding and experience of the love relationship between Christ and His Church.
