Titus 1:13

Listen to this article

“This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;”

Context:The book of Titus is one of the pastoral letters written by the apostle Paul to his disciple and co‑worker, Titus. In this particular verse, Paul is instructing Titus on how to deal with false teachers and disruptive individuals within the church in Crete.

Truthful Witness:The verse begins by affirming the truthfulness of a certain witness or statement. While the specific context of this witness is not mentioned in this verse, it likely refers to the previous verse where Paul quotes a Cretan prophet who described the people of Crete as “always liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons” (Titus 1:12). Paul acknowledges the truthfulness of this description.

Rebuke Them Sharply:Paul instructs Titus to rebuke these false teachers and disruptive individuals sharply. This implies a firm and direct confrontation of their erroneous teachings or disruptive behaviour. The purpose of such rebuke is not to humiliate or attack them personally, but rather to correct their error and bring them back to a right understanding of the faith.

Sound in the Faith:The goal of the sharp rebuke is to restore these individuals to a state of soundness in the faith. The phrase “sound in the faith” means having a healthy and accurate understanding of the teachings of the Christian faith. Paul desires that through this rebuke, they may be corrected and come to embrace the truth of the gospel, abandoning false doctrines and disruptive behaviour.

Application:This verse carries an important lesson for us today. It emphasises the need for boldness and firmness when dealing with false teachings and disruptive elements within the church. While we should always exercise love and grace, there are times when it is necessary to confront error and maintain the purity of the gospel message. However, it is important to approach such situations with wisdom, discernment, and a heart of restoration, seeking to bring individuals back to a right understanding of the faith.
