And the Angell that talked with me, came againe and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleepe: Zechariah 4:1 (KJV)

The book of Zechariah is a prophetic work written during the period when the Jewish people were returning from Babylonian exile to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. Zechariah’s visions and messages encourage perseverance in the rebuilding effort and fidelity to God.

In this verse the angel who appears is the same messenger who had spoken to Zechariah earlier. The angel functions as God’s emissary, delivering divine revelations and guiding the prophet toward understanding God’s purposes.

The phrase “waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep” conveys both a literal awakening from a deep sleep and a metaphorical stirring of spiritual awareness. Zechariah is shifted from the ordinary realm into a heightened spiritual state where he can receive God’s vision.

The vision also includes striking imagery such as the “seven eyes of the LORD” on the wings of the cherubim and the instruction to “Observe the windows.” These details emphasize God’s all‑seeing watchfulness over the rebuilding work and invite the people to look beyond immediate circumstances, trusting in divine providence.

Believers today are called to maintain spiritual alertness, remaining vigilant and receptive to God’s voice. Like Zechariah, we should cultivate a heart that is open through prayer, Scripture study, and a willingness to heed divine prompting.

The encounter reminds us that God can awaken us from spiritual slumber, offering deeper insight into His plans. It encourages an expectant posture toward divine interventions and revelations, trusting that God’s watchful presence guides and sustains us.

In summary, Zechariah 4:1 highlights the angel’s visitation that awakens the prophet, underscores God’s omniscient care, and calls the people to observe and trust in His work. By staying attentive and receptive to God’s leading, we can gain richer understanding of His purposes for our lives.
