Zechariah 8:13
And it shall come to passe, that as yee were a curse among the heathen, O house of Iudah, and house of Israel; so will I saue you, and ye shalbe a blessing: feare not, but let your handes bee strong. Zechariah 8:13 (KJV)
Zechariah was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the returned exiles in Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. In that period the people faced the daunting task of rebuilding the city and the temple, and Zechariah’s words encouraged them to persevere in their faith.
The verse begins by recalling the people’s former state: the house of Judah and the house of Israel had become a curse among the heathen because of their disobedience to God’s law. Their rebellion led to exile, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the loss of the temple.
Despite that condition, God promises salvation: “so will I save you.” The wording stresses God’s intention to rescue and deliver His people, showing His mercy and grace and offering them hope of restoration.
God then declares that the people will be transformed into a blessing. No longer a curse, Judah and Israel will become instruments of blessing to the nations, their restored relationship with God producing a positive impact on surrounding peoples.
The passage concludes with an exhortation to courage: “fear not, but let your hands be strong.” The people are urged to respond to God’s promise with determination, perseverance, and faith, actively engaging in the work of rebuilding and trusting in God’s provision and guidance.
Overall, Zechariah 8:13 communicates God’s redemptive plan for Judah and Israel, highlighting His intent to save them, turn them into a blessing, and empower them as agents of His Kingdom. For believers today the verse serves as a reminder to trust God’s promises, take courage in challenging circumstances, and actively participate in His work.
