Zechariah 9:1
The burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall bee the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel shalbe toward the Lord. Zechariah 9:1 (KJV)
Historical Context: Zechariah was a prophet who lived and prophesied during the post‑exilic period, after the Israelites returned from Babylonian captivity. His prophecies primarily focused on the rebuilding of the temple and the restoration of Jerusalem. Zechariah 9:1 is part of a series of oracles that address various nations.
The Burden of the Word of the Lord: “The burden” refers to a prophetic message or oracle. It signifies a weighty and serious pronouncement from God. In this case the burden is directed toward the land of Hadrach and Damascus, and also toward the peoples of the nations and the house of Israel, indicating that God’s word concerns both Israel and the surrounding Gentile nations.
The Land of Hadrach and Damascus: Hadrach is not specifically mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, so its exact location is uncertain, though scholars associate it with a region in northern Syria. Damascus was a significant city in ancient times and continues to be the capital of modern‑day Syria. The mention of these places signifies that the message of the Lord is intended for the surrounding regions.
Damascus Shall Be the Rest Thereof: The phrase can be understood as indicating that Damascus will be the centre or focus of the prophecy, the place where it finds its fulfilment, or that Damascus will find peace or rest after experiencing divine judgment.
Eyes of Man Towards the Lord: The verse concludes that “the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord.” This suggests that both the peoples of the nations and the Israelites will look to the Lord for guidance, deliverance, and salvation, implying a time of spiritual awakening and recognition of God’s authority.
Application and Lessons:
- a. God’s Sovereign Message – the passage reminds us that God communicates His messages to specific people and regions, revealing His sovereignty over nations and His concern for their spiritual state.
- b. Divine Judgment and Restoration – the reference to Damascus may symbolize God’s judgment on nations that oppose Him, followed by the promise of eventual peace and restoration for those who heed Him.
- c. Universal Call for Attention – the oracle underscores that people from all backgrounds are invited to turn their attention to God and seek His guidance.
It is important to study the entire book of Zechariah to gain a deeper understanding of its context, themes, and the broader message it conveys.
