Zephaniah 1:14
“The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.”
Context:Zephaniah 1:14 is part of a larger passage in the book of Zephaniah where the prophet warns the people of Judah about the coming judgment of the Lord.
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah, around 640-609 BC, and his message is primarily directed towards the people of Judah and the city of Jerusalem.
In this particular verse, Zephaniah emphasizes the imminent arrival of the "great day of the Lord." This phrase refers to a time of divine judgment and reckoning.
It is a day when God will manifest His power and justice to hold people accountable for their actions.
The repetition of the phrase "it is near, and hasteth greatly" underscores the urgency and imminence of the approaching day of the Lord.
The phrase "even the voice of the day of the Lord" suggests that the day itself will be marked by various signs and manifestations that indicate God’s presence and authority.
It signifies a time when God’s voice, His commands, and His decrees will be unmistakably heard.
The latter part of the verse mentions that "the mighty man shall cry there bitterly."
This could refer to powerful and influential individuals who will be overcome with sorrow and remorse as they witness the judgment of God.
Despite their strength and perceived invulnerability, they will be humbled and brought to tears by the severity of God’s judgment.
