Zephaniah 1:6
And them that are turned backe from the Lord, & those that haue not sought þ Lord, nor enquired for him. Zephaniah 1:6 (KJV)
Zephaniah 1:6 is part of the prophecy given by the prophet Zephaniah during the reign of King Josiah of Judah. The verse highlights the judgment that would come upon those who had turned away from the LORD and had not sought or inquired about Him. During Zephaniah’s time Judah was plagued by widespread corruption, idolatry, moral decay, and social injustice, as the people abandoned true worship of God and embraced various forms of idol worship. The purpose of Zephaniah’s prophecy was to warn the people of God’s impending judgment and to call them to repentance.
The phrase “turned back from the LORD” refers to those who once followed God but have now abandoned His ways, a deliberate act of rebellion and disobedience that severs their relationship with Him. The second part of the verse speaks of those who have not sought the LORD or inquired for Him; they were indifferent, self‑sufficient, relying on their own wisdom and strength rather than the guidance that comes from God.
Zephaniah’s message carries significant spiritual implications. When people distance themselves from the LORD and reject His authority, they separate themselves from His blessings, protection, and guidance, becoming vulnerable to His judgment and discipline.
The passage calls believers to remain faithful and to seek the LORD wholeheartedly, desiring His presence, guidance, and wisdom in every aspect of life. By seeking the LORD diligently we acknowledge our dependence on Him and recognize that apart from Him we can do nothing. It warns against complacency and apathy, urging us to guard against indifference by pursuing a deeper connection with the LORD through prayer, diligent study of His Word, and obedient living.
In summary, Zephaniah 1:6 underscores the consequences of turning away from the LORD and failing to seek Him, emphasizing the need for repentance, genuine seeking of God, and a desire to align our lives with His will. Through this study we are reminded of the importance of maintaining a faithful relationship with God, seeking Him diligently, and guarding against indifference.
