1 Chronicles 1:36

The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

1 Chronicles 1:36 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the genealogy in 1 Chronicles 1, which traces descendants from Adam through the nations. Here the record focuses on the family of Esau, the elder son of Isaac and brother of Jacob. Eliphaz was Esau’s firstborn son by Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite (Genesis 36:4). The Chronicler lists Eliphaz’s sons to show how the Edomites descended from Esau, connecting Israel to its broader family history.

Teman, the firstborn, shares his name with a region in Edom, often linked with wisdom (Jeremiah 49:7). Omar, Zephi, and Gatam appear only here and in the parallel list, with little further detail. Kenaz is called a duke of Edom in Genesis 36:11, indicating a leading role. Timna was Eliphaz’s concubine, and her son Amalek became the ancestor of the Amalekites, who later opposed Israel (Exodus 17:8-16).

The parallel account in Genesis 36:11-12 gives the same names, with slight spelling differences such as Zepho for Zephi. It also clarifies that Amalek was born to Timna. These genealogies affirm the historical reality of these peoples and God’s sovereign care over all nations, even as He preserved the line of Israel for His covenant promises.

Though many names here receive only brief mention, each person mattered to God. This list reminds readers that God knows every individual and works through ordinary family histories. It also warns that choices and relationships can have lasting effects, as seen in the Amalekites’ conflict with Israel. God’s purposes are not limited to famous figures; He works through every life.

God’s purposes move through real families and real people, not only through famous figures. This genealogy encourages trust in God’s faithful oversight of history and of each believer’s life, even when a name appears only once in Scripture. Every person in this list was known and valued by God, and so is every believer today.
