1 Chronicles 1:52

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon, 1 Chronicles 1:52 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogy of the Israelite people from Adam to the return from exile. The verse in question belongs to a genealogical record that lists members of Esau’s family. In Genesis 36:2‑3 Aholibamah is identified as one of Esau’s wives, the daughter of Anah, the son of Zibeon, and her presence among Esau’s descendants is noted in the chronicler’s list.

Although the verse mentions Aholibamah, the names Elah and Pinon do not appear in the scriptural genealogies of Esau’s descendants as recorded in 1 Chronicles 1:35‑54 or in Genesis 36:1‑43, and the title “duke” is not used in the passage. The chronicler’s purpose in presenting these genealogies was to establish a historical connection and to preserve the lineage of the Israelite nation, including the tribes of Israel and the descendants of Esau. By recording each generation, the lists provide a comprehensive account of the families that followed the patriarchs.

This particular section may seem brief and lacking in narrative or theological teaching, yet it is an essential component of the larger genealogical record found throughout 1 Chronicles. Studying the complete genealogy allows readers to gain insight into the historical lineage and to recognize the individuals who played a role in the broader narrative of the Israelite nation. Ultimately, 1 Chronicles 1:52 serves as a reminder of the importance of historical records and the preservation of lineage within the biblical context.
