1 Chronicles 1:53
Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar, 1 Chronicles 1:53 (KJV)
“And the sons of Jobal; Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.” 1 Chronicles 1:53 is part of the genealogical account recorded in the first chapter of 1 Chronicles. This chapter presents a record of the descendants of Adam and traces the family lines through successive generations. The passage records members of the Horite tribe associated with Seir, rather than focusing on the line of Joktan. In this verse Jobal is named as the father of two sons, Sheba and Dedan. Jobal is not identified elsewhere in Scripture as the same individual as Jobab; Jobab appears in a different genealogical context (see 1 Chronicles 1:34). Sheba and Dedan are recognized as ancient Arabian groups that are mentioned elsewhere in the biblical narrative. The verse also records that the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. These names represent sub‑groups descended from Dedan, located in the Arabian region.
Genesis 25:3 (KJV) states: “And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.” Jokshan was a son of Abraham through his wife Keturah. Sheba and Dedan are known to be ancient Arabian tribes, and they are frequently referenced throughout the Bible. The sons of Dedan—Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim—are the descendants of Dedan and are considered additional tribal groups within the Arabian region.
Genealogies in the Bible often serve to establish historical and ancestral connections, to provide background for later events and stories, and to illustrate the diverse origins and descendants of the nations mentioned in Scripture. While this particular verse does not convey an explicit moral or theological lesson, it contributes to the overall biblical narrative by showing the varied origins and descendants of the peoples recorded in Scripture.
