1 Chronicles 11:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that traces the lineage of David and provides an overview of his reign as king over Israel. Chapter 11 focuses on the mighty men who supported David and highlights their individual exploits and bravery.

The Egyptian Warrior:In this verse, it mentions an encounter between one of David’s mighty men and an Egyptian warrior of great stature. The Egyptian was an imposing figure, standing at a height of five cubits (approximately 7.5 feet or 2.3 meters). The description emphasizes the strength and size of the opponent faced by David’s warrior.

The Egyptian’s Weapon:The verse also mentions the weapon wielded by the Egyptian, which was a spear resembling a weaver’s beam. This comparison highlights the size and weight of the spear, suggesting that it was exceptionally large and formidable.

David’s Mighty Man’s Victory:Despite the Egyptian’s stature and powerful weapon, the unnamed warrior confronted him fearlessly. Armed with only a staff, he engaged in combat, managed to disarm the Egyptian, and ultimately killed him with his own spear. This incredible act of bravery and skill demonstrated the strength and courage of David’s mighty men.
