1 Chronicles 11:43
Hanan the son of Maachah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite,
1 Chronicles 11:43 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes a long list of David’s mighty warriors in 1 Chronicles 11:10–47. These men helped David establish his kingdom through loyalty and courage. The list often names each warrior’s family or hometown, showing that every soldier mattered to the nation. Their collective effort reminds us that God’s work often advances through many hands working together.
Meaning
Hanan the son of Maachah and Joshaphat the Mithnite appear only here in Scripture. The name Hanan means “gracious” or “merciful,” while Joshaphat means “Yahweh has judged.” Maachah may be a personal name or a place, and Mithnite likely points to a town, though its exact location is unknown. Their brief mention does not reduce their worth. God chose to record their names forever, showing that He values faithful service even when it is not widely known.
Biblical connections
David’s army included people from different backgrounds, as seen with Ithmah the Moabite in the same list. This openness reflects the truth that God values character and faith over nationality, just as 1 Samuel 16:7 teaches that God looks at the heart. The Moabites descended from Lot, yet a Moabite could serve beside Israel’s king. God’s kingdom has always welcomed those who trust Him, regardless of their origin.
Application
These two warriors remind us that faithful service does not require public fame. Many believers labor quietly, and God sees and remembers every act done for His kingdom. We can serve with whole hearts, knowing that our names are written in heaven, not because we are famous, but because we are His. Every contribution, however small, is significant in God’s purposes.
Reflection
God’s record of these men encourages us to value every person’s contribution. No role is too small in His purposes. We can ask ourselves whether we serve with the same loyalty and courage, even when no one else notices. Let us be faithful in the tasks God gives us, trusting that He sees and rewards what is done for Him.
