1 Chronicles 11:6
And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.
1 Chronicles 11:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of David becoming king over all Israel. After he was anointed at Hebron, he led his men to capture the stronghold of Jebus, later called Jerusalem. The Jebusites were a Canaanite people who trusted in their city’s high walls and steep slopes, thinking it could never be taken. David’s offer was a strategic leadership decision to motivate his men and secure the city as his capital.
Meaning
David announced that the first soldier to strike the Jebusites would become chief and captain. This was a clear promise of honor for brave action. Joab, the son of Zeruiah, David’s sister, went up first and won the city. So he received the promised position. Joab’s bold step changed his future and the history of Israel. His rise shows that leadership often follows demonstrated bravery and initiative.
Biblical connections
This event prepared Jerusalem to become the city of David and later the place of the temple. God had chosen Jerusalem as the center for worship and rule. The chapter also lists David’s mighty men, showing that courage and loyalty were highly valued in his kingdom. The account is not merely historical; it reminds us of the value of faithful service.
Application
David rewarded initiative and courage. Leaders today can learn to notice and honor those who step forward in difficult tasks. Joab did not wait for another to go first; he acted. Faith often calls us to move ahead even when the obstacle seems impossible. God uses human courage and leadership to fulfill His purposes, and He sees our faithful service.
Reflection
Although the verse does not name God, His guiding hand is clear. Jerusalem became the heart of David’s kingdom, and from there God’s plan continued. We can trust that God sees our faithful service and will honor it in His time.
