1 Chronicles 12:6
Elkanah, and Iesiah, and Azariel, and Ioezer, and Iashobeam, the Korhites, 1 Chronicles 12:6 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles provides a historical account of the genealogy and reign of King David, emphasizing the establishment of his kingdom and the organization of his military forces. Chapter 12 focuses on the mighty warriors who joined David during his time of exile and adversity before he became king. In verse 12:6 the passage lists several of those warriors: Elkanah, Jesiah, Azareel, Joezer, and Jashobeam of the Korhites.
The Korhites were descendants of Kohath, a son of Levi, and therefore belonged to the priestly tribe. Although the Korhite clan was primarily associated with priestly duties, some members, such as Jashobeam, served in non‑priestly roles, including military service. The inclusion of these names highlights individuals who demonstrated allegiance and loyalty to David even when he had not yet assumed the throne. Their willingness to leave their own families and join David in the wilderness strengthened his fledgling force and contributed significantly to the eventual establishment of his reign.
Jashobeam stands out among the listed warriors. He is further described in 1 Chronicles 11:11‑14 as a mighty man who, in a single battle, killed three hundred men with his spear. This extraordinary valour and skill exemplify the dedication and bravery of David’s supporters. The broader context of 1 Chronicles 12 shows that these loyal and courageous individuals played a vital role in bolstering David’s military capability, securing victories, and ultimately supporting his rise to the throne.
The example of these warriors serves as a timeless reminder for believers today to demonstrate loyalty, commitment, and bravery in their own lives, following the pattern of steadfast support shown to God’s anointed king in the biblical narrative.
