1 Chronicles 12:5

Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite,

1 Chronicles 12:5 (KJV)

This verse is part of a list of valiant warriors who came to David at Ziklag while he was fleeing from King Saul. Many of these men were from the tribe of Benjamin, Saul’s own tribe, yet they recognized David as God’s chosen king. Joining David was dangerous, for he was still an outlaw in the eyes of the ruling king. Their arrival meant risking their lives.

The verse names five men: Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite. The name Bealiah means “Yahweh is Lord” or “the Lord is God,” reflecting their faith. Shephatiah the Haruphite likely came from a place called Haruph or Hariph, a family also mentioned in Nehemiah 7:24, showing their lasting legacy. These were not priests but soldiers, yet their names are recorded with care, showing that God notices each person who serves Him.

Their support for David during his exile mirrors the loyalty God desires from His people. Their courage and willingness to risk their lives for God’s anointed king point forward to the greater King, Jesus Christ, who would come from David’s line. The names recorded in this list remind us that God values each person’s faithful service, even when their role seems small. Just as these warriors joined David at a dangerous time, believers are called to stand with Christ, even when it is costly.

These warriors teach us to stand with God’s chosen leaders, even when it is costly or dangerous. Their example challenges us to use our skills and strength for God’s purposes, not just for our own benefit. We can also take comfort that God knows our names and remembers our faithful acts, just as He recorded these men in Scripture. Consider how you might support God’s work in your own community, even when it requires personal sacrifice.

Consider how you can show loyalty to God and His people in your own circumstances. Are you willing to support what God is doing, even when it requires sacrifice? Let the faithfulness of these obscure warriors inspire you to serve faithfully, knowing that your contribution matters to God. Their example reminds us that no act of obedience is hidden from Him.
