1 Chronicles 13:4
And all the Congregation saide, that they would doe so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. 1 Chronicles 13:4 (KJV)
After becoming king over all Israel, David desired to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, the city that would become the centre of Israel’s religious and political life. He recognized the Ark as the visible symbol of God’s presence and glory, and he gathered the nation from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath to retrieve the sacred box from Kiriath‑jearim.
The people responded affirmatively, saying, “Let us bring the ark of the LORD thither, that it may be in the city of David.” Their unanimous answer, “the thing was right in the eyes of all the people,” shows a clear consensus that David’s plan was righteous and worthy of support.
This unity of purpose was crucial for undertaking such a significant religious endeavour. The congregation’s agreement reflected their collective commitment, their trust in David’s leadership, and their reverence for the Ark as the covenant sign of God’s enduring relationship with Israel.
David’s longing to place the Ark in Jerusalem reveals his deep desire for God’s presence among the people. By situating the Ark in the capital, he sought to make the divine presence the heart of the nation, reinforcing both worship and national identity.
The passage also underscores the importance of seeking consensus in matters of great consequence. When the whole assembly affirms a course of action, it helps guard against hasty decisions and fosters cooperation, ensuring that the community moves forward together in faith and purpose.
