1 Chronicles 14:14

Therfore Dauid enquired againe of God, and God said vnto him, Goe not vp after them, turne away from them, and come vpon them ouer against the mulbery trees. 1 Chronicles 14:14 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of David’s reign as king of Israel. In this particular chapter, David faces a military challenge from the Philistines. Initially, David goes out to battle without inquiring of God first, which leads to defeat. Only after this initial failure does David seek God’s guidance.

Seeking God’s Guidance: David’s decision to inquire of God after his defeat is significant. It shows his recognition of his mistake and his desire to align his actions with God’s will. As believers, we can learn from David’s example and recognize the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, acknowledging Him in all our ways so that He can direct our paths.

Divine Direction: When David inquires of God again, God provides specific instructions, telling him not to pursue the Philistines directly but to come upon them over against the mulberry trees. This divine direction highlights God’s knowledge of the situation and His specific plan for victory. It emphasizes the importance of following God’s guidance rather than relying solely on human strategies.

Trusting God’s Timing: The command to “Go not up after them; turn away from them” underscores the importance of trusting God’s timing and direction. Although David might have been tempted to act impulsively, God instructs him to wait and approach the Philistines from a different angle. This teaches us that following God’s lead, even when it requires waiting or changing plans, can lead to victory.

God’s Faithfulness: The account in this chapter, including verse 14, demonstrates God’s faithfulness to David. Despite David’s initial mistake of going into battle without seeking God’s guidance, God still provides wisdom and leads him to victory. This serves as a reminder that when we seek God’s guidance, trust in His timing, and follow His instructions, He remains faithful to lead us to triumph over challenges.
