1 Chronicles 15:21

And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed–edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.

1 Chronicles 15:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of King David bringing the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. Earlier, the first attempt failed because the Levites did not carry the ark as God commanded. Now David carefully organizes the Levites, and he appoints skilled musicians for the joyful procession. Worship is not left to chance; it is planned with care and reverence.

The six men named here were Levites chosen to play harps. The word “Sheminith” likely means “eighth,” possibly referring to an eight-stringed instrument or a lower musical register. The phrase “to excel” suggests they led or directed the music with skill. Their specific assignment shows that worship involved both order and ability. Each man had a clear role, and together they provided a strong musical foundation for the procession.

Obed-edom had earlier received the ark into his house, and God blessed his household because of it (1 Chronicles 13:14). Now he joins the procession, showing how those who honor God are drawn into His worship. The term “Sheminith” also appears in the title of Psalm 6, linking this musical instruction to the psalmody of Israel. This connection reminds us that the same careful attention to music continued in the worship of the temple.

God values excellence in worship. The Levites did not offer casual or careless praise; they used their gifts with precision and dedication. Believers today can serve God with the same care, offering their best skills and efforts in whatever role He gives them. Worship is not only a matter of the heart but also of faithful preparation. Whether we sing, play, teach, or serve quietly, our work can honor God when done with diligence.

This verse reminds us that God welcomes joyful, well-ordered praise. The ark symbolized His presence among His people, and the music accompanied that holy moment. When we worship, we can do so with reverence and gladness, trusting that God delights in the sincere service of His people. Let us ask ourselves: do we prepare our hearts and skills for worship, or do we offer Him what is left over?
